Muhammad Yousuf pulls out of T20 Cup

Just a day after accepting the captaincy of a Lahore team, Mohammad Yousuf on Thursday withdrew from the forthcoming Faysal Bank Twenty20 tournament in Karachi because of ‘fitness problems’.

Yousuf who was supposed to lead Lahore Lions in the domestic Twenty20 Championship getting underway in K
hi from September 25, told team officials on Thursday that he won’t be able to play in the tournament just before the start of a practice match in Lahore.

Sources said that Yousuf told the Lahore Lions’ management that he wasn’t fully fit and has decided to pull out of the eagerly-awaited Twenty20 tournament.

Yousuf’s decision is quite surprising considering the fact that he had just recently accepted Lahore’s offer to lead the Lions in Karachi. Lions’ team management preferred the aging Yousuf ahead of seasoned allrounder Abdul Razzaq, who had captained their team in the last Twenty20 competition.

On Wednesday, Khawaja Nadeem, president of the Lahore City Cricket Association, told reporters that Yousuf will be leading the Lions in the Karachi event.

The primary reason behind Lahore’s decision to hand over the team’s captaincy to Yousuf was that Razzaq was previously busy featuring in the Champions League twenty20 event in India for Leicestershire Foxes. However, Razzaq will now be available for the Lahore Lions as the Foxes were knocked out of the qualifying stage of the Champions League in Hyderabad (India) the other day.
